What is a Self Love Photoshoot?

a way to celebrate who you are and the love that you hold within you

As a photographer of love stories, I felt it was important to keep sessions for individuals open because while, for many, a love story often involves another person, some love stories involve oneself.

When I first started in portrait photography, I used to take self-portraits in the outdoors as part of a project called the 375 Project. The style was often moody (reflecting how I felt during my teenage years) and very different from the romantic and gentle style I have settled upon nowadays. I had engaged in the project as a way to practice and better my photography however taking self-portraits allowed me to see myself in a way I'd never seen myself before. It was then, when I was just 16/17 years old, that I began to discover the power that photography can have on a person.

When I came back to photography, after pursuing a different career path for many years, I found myself going down the fashion route. I loved meeting individuals and photographing them, yet I was struggling. I felt that, for fashion shoots, I was just there for a job and the impersonal nature of the work grated on me. I wasn't there to get to know the model necessarily and I certainly wasn't there to capture their personality and who they were, I was just there to make a nice-looking photo and that alone. When I would work with models newer to the industry, however, their excitement excited me. Their love for the photos made me feel like I was doing something worthwhile. I came to realise that I loved taking pictures of people who wanted to have their photos taken. Who loved the magic of the process and who found the photos afterwards to be a product of collaboration, of love and care.

It was this combination, the knowledge of how photography had helped me to see myself in a new light and the way I saw other people connect with my work, that drew me to creating an offering of portrait photography that meant more.

So,

What actually is a self-love photoshoot/confidence photoshoot?

In my work, a self-love/confidence photoshoot is a space for you to explore your connection with yourself, and for you to celebrate who you are. It is a space for us to create art together and capture your authenticity. It is a space for you to try something new and push through any boundaries of self-criticism or self-consciousness that might arise. To show you that there is a deservingness and worthiness within you that cannot be expressed in numbers or words.

The intention for the session can be big or small, you can set just one or many. This is your space.

The photos we take can serve many different purposes. For some, the purpose is in the session itself, and for some, it lies in the end product. To see the photos and see yourself in a beautiful, authentic way can be the intention. Or to create a reminder for you in the future, that this is where you are now or how far you've come.

When you first enquire, we discuss why you've reached out, and what is it that you would like to explore or work on. What intentions do you have for the art we will create together? Is anything holding you back at the moment, is there a place that you see yourself evolving to? What is it that you'd like to see through the photos? We explore who you are and build a session that is unique to you, a session that serves the purposes and intentions that you have set.

The sessions are different for every person and it is this uniqueness that I love to help you embrace for your photoshoot.

An intentional portrait session with me involves a lot of care and getting to know each other. It is through the connection that we build, along with trust and comfort, that we create photos reflecting the magnificence of who you are.
